Beyond MIDI: The Handbook of Musical Codes
Beyond MIDI originated as a project of the Study Group on Musical Data and Computer Applications of the International Musicological Society. At the time the study group was headed by Walter B. Hewlett and Eleanor Selfridge-Field. The systems defined within it were representative of the most active areas within this group. Until 1992 most applications were based on mainframe or minicomputer systems, but the parallel rise of MIDI and personal computers gave much broader scope to the possible avenues by which to pursue musical applications. The use of the internet was still limited in 1997, but this changed rapidly in the next few years.
